Abstract
The fiftieth anniversary of the International Atomic EnergyAgency (IAEA) is an appropriate time to examine safeguardsimplementation in general as well as in specific states. This paperwill do so primarily in the context of the Canadian experience. Itwill briefly examine Canada’s past and current experiences in thedevelopment and implementation of safeguards in Canadapursuant to the Canada/IAEA safeguards agreement and theAdditional Protocol to that agreement. It will also offer someviews on future directions for safeguards implementation inCanada. In addition to discussion of safeguards concepts,approaches and implementation strategies relevant to theCanadian situation, the paper will also address the role played bythe Canadian Safeguards Support Program in contributing tosafeguards implementation in Canada and more generally.
