Abstract
As in many other countries, Spanish nuclear security has undergonea substantial change, increasing requirements and implementingmeasures since the events of September 11, 2001. Spain,following international recommendations and implementing theFundamental Principles of the Convention on Physical Protectionof Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities has establisheda national nuclear security regime to protect the public and environmentagainst the malevolent use of nuclear and radioactivematerial. This regime is structured in three lines of defense, andthe first, called the Integrated Nuclear Security Model, deals withprotecting nuclear facilities against radiological sabotage andtheft of nuclear material. This document gives open and basicinformation about responsibilities of licensees and Spanish competentauthorities, the regulatory framework, and the process ofimproving nuclear security.
