Abstract
In order to enhance the current safeguards system the importance of open source of information has been emphasised. The IAEA, Department of Safeguards is in the process of developing an intelligent decision support system, based on a human-computer interaction, for the monitoring and evaluation of States’ nuclear activities in an objective and balanced manner. The programme for the Development of an Intelligent System for Monitoring and Evaluation of Peaceful Nuclear Activities (DISNA) was launched to achieve these objectives. The first phase on development of a conceptual model has already been accomplished. A demonstration prototype is being developed which will be followed by a prototype and finally a work station version. When fully developed, DISNA will provide a mechanism for use in monitoring and evaluation of all pertinent information for current as well as future needs of the IAEA such as nuclear free zones, monitoring of treaties, etc..
