Abstract
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is the organization responsible for the implementation of safeguards in Canada. In particular, it ensures, through its regulatory framework and compliance activities, that Canada meets its safeguards obligations to the International Atomic Energy Agency. In this paper, we review the role of the CNSC in ensuring the successful implementation of safeguards at facilities in Canada. Safeguards are applied across the full range of fuel cyle activities, including: uranium mining and milling, uranium refinement and conversion, fuel fabrication, nuclear power generation, and nuclear research and development.
