Abstract
As DOE continues to reduce the footprint of the cold war era weapons material production sites, an unrecognized, yet valuable, resource is becoming extinct in the process. The ability to perform sensitive, secure, in-field testing/demonstrations which require a “nuclear related environment” is a sought after attribute for government organizations, national security labs, defense threat reduction agency, DHS, DOD as well as local, state and national security organizations. A great deal of research and development has been, and is currently, being funded in the area of nuclear safeguard technology and nuclear deterrence. Additionally, in-field demonstrations defining capability and technique are needed by various government organizations to “plan for and become effective in” deterrence for the evolving dynamic security threat in today’s world’s structure. Savannah River Site’s facilities provide realistic environment and surroundings to support nuclear related activities requiring a safe, secure, remote location which possess a variety of radiological backgrounds, from the smallest project requiring a small scale bench test of the newest security technology, to a large scale performance of a force-on-force in foreign surroundings.
