The Nuclear Smuggling Outreach Initiative

The Nuclear Smuggling Outreach Initiative (NSOI) is a State Department-led effort to enhance partnerships with key countries around the world to strengthen capabilities to prevent, detect, and respond to incidents of nuclear smuggling through both bilateral partnerships to improve such capabilities and donor partnerships to support these improvements. As a State-led, interagency initiative, NSOI involves its U.S. government counterparts closely in every step in the process. The NSOI team works with the Departments of State, Energy, Defense, Homeland Security, and Justice, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, our U.S. Embassy counterparts in the engaged countries, and other relevant agencies. This process ensures that NSOI presents a comprehensive, U.S. government strategy for improving anti-nuclear smuggling capabilities in each partner country.
