Abstract
Based on the personal experiences of a nuclear engineering graduate student, this paper seeks to share the benefits of, challenges of and lessons learned from working within and trying to understand nuclear public policy. These experiences come from a United States federal government internship, a nongovernmental organization workshop, and various liberal arts university courses. These lessons have been condensed into three categories to prepare a young nuclear safeguards professional to better understand public policy: (1) establish a nuclear policy foundation (2) discuss the development of critical reading skills (3) prepare for technical policy interactions.
