Abstract
The ES-4100 Shipping is drum-type transportation package developed by the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) as a replacement for the DOT 6-M 110-gallon specification package. Y-12 contracted Oak Ridge National Laboratory to perform certification testing of this package design. Testing was carried out by the ORNL Transportation Technologies Group at the National Transportation Research Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Prototype test units were subjected to both Normal Conditions of Transport (NCT) tests and the Hypothetical Accident Conditions (HAC) test sequence as defined in 10 CFR 71. This paper details the testing process and highlights lessons learned during testing.
