Abstract
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) ships a wide variety of radioisotopes. Many of these can be shipped as Type A; however, some higher activity sources require the contents to be in a Department of Transportation (DOT) special form container. ORNL is designing, fabricating, and certifying several new Type A packages, including a 10-gal Type A package primarily to be used for transport of 252Cf sources, a 55-gal Type A package primarily to be used for transport of americium/curium/lanthanide oxide materials recovered from high-burnup targets, and a Type A package designed for transport of irradiated actinium targets. Although these containers are being designed with specific applications in mind, they will be as flexible as possible so that they can potentially be used for the shipment of other materials. They are all being designed with neutron and/or gamma shielding for contents reading up to 5000 Rem/h.
