Abstract
Neutron counting systems used for nuclear safeguards applications have traditionally relied on the use of Helium-3 proportional counters; however, due to the ongoing global shortage of the gas alternative technologies are now being considered for use in these systems. In this work, we investigate the use of Boron-10 lined proportional counters as neutron detectors in safeguards systems. Active and passive well counter designs are studied using a combination of MCNP modeling and experimental data. Initial results of characterization measurements of a prototype passive well counter are discussed. We show that in some instances, Boron-10 lined proportional counters may provide a viable alternative to Helium-3 in safeguards applications.
