Highlights of 1997 IAEA Symposium on International Safeguards

INTRODUCTION The 1997 IAEA Symposium on International Safeguards, held in Vienna, Austria, 13- 17 October, was the eighth in a series on the subject since 1965. This year’s meeting was again organized in cooperation with the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) and the European Safeguards Research and Development Association (ESARDA), as continuing evidence of the excellent cooperation between these three organizations which share common objectives in the safeguards field. Mr. Obie Amacker, President of INMM, and Mr. Bob Page, President of ESARDA, spoke during the Opening Ceremony. The IAEA Scientific Secretaries were James Larrimore and Abdul Fattah. Mr. Cecil Sonnier, INMM, and Mr. Carlo Foggi, ESARDA, participated in the programme committee. The symposium was attended by about 350 specialists and policymakers in the field of nuclear safeguards and verification from more than 50 countries and organizations. The next IAEA Symposium in the series is planned for the year 2001.
