Abstract
In FY-01, the DNFSB identified concerns with the amount of unneeded nuclear materials stored at the Y-12 National Security Complex (NSC) and with the age and condition of the buildings used to store the materials. Since 2001, a significant effort has been made to identify and dispose of unneeded depleted uranium metal and alloys and to relocate materials out of identified aged buildings. Since that time, Y-12 National Security Complex has re-containerized and shipped in excess of 1000 Metric Tons (1M Kg’s) of unneeded normal and depleted uranium to the Nevada Test Site. This presentation will review the drivers, history, and lessons learned from this activity.
