Abstract
To protect workers, the public, and the environment from the hazardous effects of exposure to certain materials during shipment, the Federal government regulates the packaging and/or transportation of those materials. Radioactive hazardous materials (Class 7) above specific quantities, are required to be shipped in a controlled manner in a package certified to meet specified performance standards. A package’s compliance with the regulations is documented in its Safety Analysis Report for Packaging and its use is authorized for use via a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) issued by a Certifying Official. A User registered to use the package must have, in compliance with the CoC and the SARP, a certified QA Program; packages that are fabricated and maintained; authorized contents; trained personnel, calibrated equipment, and procedures to meet the maintenance and operating requirements (including post-load leakage rate testing); and completed and controlled documentation. The 9978 is a package that has been submitted to the DOE for certification, which in combination will be authorized to transport the majority of the contents formerly shipped in the DOT Specification 6M packages.
