Abstract
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) is in the process of designing, testing, and implementing DOE 441.1-1 compliant containers. Implementation of these containers will coincide with the completion of the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF). This paper discusses the design and the implementation plan for these new containers, as well as the impact the recent UPF schedule acceleration has had on the approach to this plan. Execution of this plan will bring Y-12 and UPF into compliance with DOE 441.1-1 requirements and will ensure the safe movement of Y-12’s special nuclear material from interim storage areas to the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility (HEUMF), as well as between UPF and HEUMF, after UPF is functional. This continued transformation and modernization of the site supports Y-12’s transition to a 21st century nuclear weapons complex.
