Abstract
We have developed software for implementing the material basis set (MBS) method for isotope identification on two handheld isotope identifiers. The software consists of three modules: (1) The LAMBS (Los Alamos MBS) program, which runs on a Palm PDA (personal digital assistant) under Palm OS, and (2) the Master_LAMBS program, which runs on a PC under Windows 9x/2000/XP/ME/NT, and (3) programs used for downloading data directly from the isotope identifiers. The current version of LAMBS identifies the most likely isotope present by solving the single isotope MBS problem for a long list of medical, industrial, and SNM isotopes, and ranking them according to their ?2 value for the fit. This is a challenging problem for a PDA, which lacks the memory and processing power found in PCs. Strategies for making the Palm OS code run at a reasonable speed include use of the Master_LAMBS PC software to pre-compute as much of the problem as possible.
