Abstract
A resource intensive activity conducted by safeguards inspectors during their inspections to nuclear facilities is to verify the attachment or detachment of electronic seals. The IAEA has initiated the development of an active sealing system that reports its status via radio frequency to a data consolidation station, called the Remotely Monitored Sealing Array (RMSA). One application of the RMSA is the sealing of a growing number of dry-storage spent fuel containers although savings could be expected in numerous applications. The following paper will outline the technical specifications of the RMSA and the proposed design approach. It will then describe the projected benefits for IAEA inspectors. An outlook on future expansion of the RMSA concept will conclude the paper.
