Abstract
The Standing Committee for International Security of Radioactive and Nuclear Materials in the Nonproliferation and Arms Control Division, conducted its third annual workshop in March 2009 for Reducing the Risk from Radioactive and Nuclear Materials. Participants at this workshop examined the role of borders in nonproliferation, the issues and challenges found include: addressing illicit radioactive materials trafficking, and transportation security of radioactive materials and associated standards. Technology gaps, policy gaps, and prioritization for addressing the identified gaps were discussed. Participants included academia, policy makers, radioactive materials users, first responders to catastrophic events, physical security and safeguards specialists, and vendors of radioactive sources and transportation services. This paper summarizes the results from this workshop with the recommendations and calls to action for the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) membership community.
