Abstract
The paper presents a novel approach to manage the heterogeneous multimedia data sets. This approach is developed based on a hyper-media spatial data model in which all the data items, i.e., data in any format, will be georeferenced with respect to a common geographic reference system. Therefore, Geospatial information system (GIS) tools can be utilized to handle these data sets for query and analysis, based on a geographical region or a geographic location such as a building or a site. The first system, GeoATOMS?, was implemented in 1998. It has been demonstrated that this approach is extremely effective when data sets are dispersed in various geographic regions and/or locations. GeoATOMS? is capable of managing and tracking of nuclear materials, from mining, materials processing, fuel fabrication, nuclear materials export, power generation, to nuclear research, and nuclear waste management. This paper presents our new research on migrating the desktop solution to client/server based web solution. The design and implementation of web-based GeoATOMS will be described. The advantages are numerous if the system can be accessed on-line through web browsers and eventually through any wirelessly connected mobile devices such as PDAs or palmtops.
