Abstract
The Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) has established a Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Detection Research and Development Center. Y-12 is a WMD detection target-rich environment with real-world quantities and forms of Special Nuclear Materials (SNM), processing facilities, and locations ideal for detector demonstrations. A variety of detector projects are being developed and/or demonstrated at Y-12 such as projects involving passive and active interrogation, and alternative signatures. The project teams collaborate with universities, military establishments, and commercial vendors for their instrumentation and development. Material projects may include detection and analysis of particles and particle size distribution, technologies useful in the study of nuclear forensics. Other projects are focused at wide-area detection of radioactive and chemical signatures.
