Abstract
Storage modeling is an effective tool that the Y-12 National Security Complex uses to assist production, stockpile, and surplus-management initiatives to successfully accomplish the mission requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Storage modeling provides Y-12 management with a quick and accurate overview of primary storage facilities, including both Material Access Area (MAA) and nonMAA storage. In some applications, storage modeling provides a projected forecast over 10 years of storage activities. Y-12 has used storage modeling as a tool to assist with the consolidation of stored items from within multiple facilities to one primary storage facility, the conversion of old facilities to other storage uses, and the restructuring and re-configuration of the storage use of a half-billion-dollar facility.
