Nuclear energy can play an important role in fulfilling the ever-rising demand for energy all around the world. Presently 13% of the world’s electricity is produced by nuclear. This share of nuclear power should become greater in size because it is safe, clean, cost-effective and should be expanded worldwide to comfort the rise in carbon footprint. A large number of nations such as Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Iran, Mexico, Pakistan, South Africa, etc are expanding the nuclear energy sector. The growth of nuclear energy depends on the regulations and policy solution of wastes, non- proliferation issues, safety, and security in addition to the operational and set up the cost of nuclear power plants. Such problems can be addressed by a different kind of reactor called Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). SMRs provide a safer modular design that is safe and can be constructed in a shorter time with smaller initial capital investment. The SMRs are easy to set up and connect to the grid due to their high mobility. This paper summarizes the basic features and application of SMR.
