Abstract
It has been expected that the physical protection on spent nuclear fuels in deep geological repository is well achieved because of its rigid thick natural barrier. This study assessed the repository mining risk on future based on development of mining technology. The results imply that there will be high risk on diversion of spent fuels in repository unless proper safeguards measures are maintained for practically infinite time. Thus, direct disposal option is not recommended in this study. As an alternative partitioning and transmutation (P&T) is recommended because it will effectively reduce the diversion risk of direct disposal option by shortening the surveillance time period.
