Abstract
This paper presents a brief description of the upgrade of the Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System (NMMSS) under the leadership of the DOE Office of Security and Emergency Operations (SO-23). The upgrade includes designing, developing and testing of the system on a new software platform. NMMSS is an important information resource for the US government in meeting its domestic and international safeguards requirements and in providing information needs for nonsafeguards management of very valuable nuclear materials assets. A new software platform will replace the Microsoft FoxPro software that has been used by the NMMSS since September 1995, a change that is expected to enhance the engineering efforts in redesigning the system. The improved NMMSS will be more responsive to important new materials accounting needs, such as tracking foreign obligations under the International Agreements for Cooperation. The design, development and testing efforts are being conducted in accordance with the DOE Software Engineering Methodology (SEM). The paper will present a status report on the development efforts, an overview of the new system design and an outline of scheduled activities leading up to parallel test and deployment.
