Abstract
Creative use of razor ribbon with a built in sensor is described. Preventing an intruder from utilizing the various structures surrounding an asset can often present unique problems. One such structure is the tower. Not only do we desire to prevent an intruder from being able to climb the tower, we also need to be able to detect the attempt. Most solutions to this problem addressed only the detection aspect. Our thoughts seem to lean toward “If we can detect, we can prevent.” Several Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories have tried various technologies in the detection area. Microwave, infrared and microphonic cables all have inherent limitations mostly due to environmental factors. The Sensor Coil 600 manufactured by DeTekion Security Systems, Inc. provides both prevention and detection in one package. This sensor was installed on a tower and evaluated for 60 days. Under all environmental conditions encountered, the sensor performed above expectations during the evaluation period. With all variables set to optimum settings, the sensor produced zero false alarms. Although not designed for this type installation, i.e. wrapped around a triangular structure, use of this sensor on a tower has worked very well.
