Abstract
Project management is affected by cultural differences. The three basic elements of project management—scope, cost, and schedule—must be managed and monitored regardless of where the project is executed. However, culture can influence the perception of these three basic elements of project management; and it can influence the management techniques used to control and monitor scope, cost, and schedule for a project. In executing projects, it is beneficial to be aware of differences that may be driven by culture. Assumptions may be made that, if not specifically stated, can cause delay or confusion in developing and executing projects. Examples are provided to illustrate cultural influences on project management. Suggestions and tools are provided that may assist a project manager in a foreign setting.
