Abstract
NMIP will be the national resource that provides the United States Government with comprehensive, integrated, and properly vetted information about worldwide nuclear materials to support critical activities, policies, and investments related to nonproliferation, counterproliferation, and counterterrorism. The Nuclear Materials Program (NMIP) was established by Presidential Directive NSPD- 48/HSPD-17 in August 2006. It will be the national resource that provides the United States Government with comprehensive, integrated, and properly vetted information about worldwide nuclear materials to support critical activities, policies, and investments related to nonproliferation, counterproliferation, and counterterrorism. Its goals and objectives are: 1. Analysis – Evaluate nuclear material information to: • Determine the location, identity and quantity of nuclear materials worldwide; • Assess the security status of nuclear material in storage and in transit; • Identify nuclear materials characteristics (e.g., isotopic composition) ; • Identify gaps in our knowledge of worldwide holdings; and • Create and maintain an archive of relevant nuclear materials samples that are held anywhere in the United States.
