Abstract
The “Safeguards by Design” (SBD) concept is intended to promote the integrat ion of safeguards into the design of a new nuclear facility from initial planning through construction, operation, and decommissioning. Starting in 2009, NNSA’s Next Generation Safeguards Initiative (NGSI) has promoted this concept as a best practice for the nuc lear community among nuclear facility designers and operators, as well as international safeguards experts. NGSI has also supported the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) efforts to develop and promote the SBD concept. This paper discusses the NN SA SBD project accomplishments and its ongoing activities to engage stakeholders on SBD including outreach to U.S. small and modular reactor design vendors.
