Abstract
In light of the recent events of September 11, 2001, ensuring the continued, highest level of security to our Nation’s nuclear weapons complex is of utmost importance. Recognizing the critical importance of applying state-of-the-art technology solutions and maintaining a strong technological base, a Task Force on Technology Solutions for Safeguards and Security was established. This Task Force will identify gaps in implementation of safeguards and security technologies at National Nuclear Security Administration facilities and provide recommendations to management as to technology solutions, which either currently exist or require research and development, to fill these gaps. The Special Projects Division, Office of Nuclear Safeguards and Security Programs, is leading this important effort. Existing technologies identified by the Task Force may be implemented immediately based upon the availability of funds. Technology solutions requiring research and development will be forwarded to the Department of Energy Office of Security. This paper will discuss the process undertaken by the Task Force, highlight efforts taken to date, and discuss next steps.
