Abstract
Morocco’s National Center of Nuclear Energy Sciences and Technology (CNESTEN) plays an important role in developing Morocco’s human resources for the future introduction of a safe, secure nuclear energy program, in the mean time its role has expanded in recent years. In cooperation with the Partnership for Nuclear Security (PNS), CNESTEN set up the region’s first Institute of Nuclear Material Management (INMM) chapter and co-hosted a workshop in Rabat, Morocco, in February 2012 on nuclear security curriculum development with professors from throughout the region. CNESTEN’s International Training Center-Maamora, which is currently under construction, is under development to enhance CNESTEN training capability and became a regional center of excellence in safety, security, safeguards, and radiation protection standards. Morocco intends to play an important role in ensuring that the growing interest in nuclear power in the region is strongly coupled with proper appreciation of the role of safety and security.
