Abstract
MetamicTM Neutron Shielding is a fully dense, discontinuously reinforced metal matrix composite which is produced using powder metallurgy techniques. This material consists of a high purity 6061 alloy matrix reinforced with Type 1 ASTM C-750 isotopically graded boron carbide (B&). This material is extruded into a variety of product forms, ranging from sheet and plate to angle, channel, round and square tube, and other profiles. It is intended to provide neutron shielding in reactor storage pools as well as dry storage and transportation cask applications. This paper discusses the method used to produce this material and the techniques used to characterize the homogeneity of the B,C dispersion, which is essential to the effectiveness of any neutron shielding. This paper also discusses mechanical and physical properties of the material and initial welding and anodization trials with regard to expected application and performance requirements.
