Abstract
The needs and requirements for the production of nuclear materials and related nuclear weapon components at the Y-12 National Security Complex have changed considerably over the past 20 years. New manufacturing processes, related equipment, productivity and safety concerns, planned facility upgrades, and aging computing environments, have all contributed to the need to replace the manufacturing execution system at Y-12. New approaches are needed to collect, maintain, and report information related to nuclear materials manufacturing and processing in a 21st-century environment. The Y-12 National Security Complex has initiated a project called MOMentum (Manufacturing Operations Management Modernization) to replace a suite of 20-year-old legacy shop-floor control systems. This presentation will describe the ongoing efforts to develop and implement a SAP-based system solution that will integrate all manufacturing functions at the shop-floor level. It will highlight new approaches for integrating enterprise resource planning (ERP) in manufacturing processes and the promotion of Lean concepts. New information management methods for planning, controlling, and performing work processes via automated data collection techniques and electronic document delivery will also be presented. Lessons learned during the project initiation and development phases, and impact on the organizations involved will be presented.
