Abstract
The Nuclear Threat Initiative and Institute of Nuclear Materials Management collaborated on international workshops for global best practices in nuclear material control and accountability (MC&A) and physical protection. These workshops took place in Prague, Czech Republic in June 2004. The Materials Control and Accountability Technical Division and the Physical Protection Technical Division of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management jointly sponsored these special international workshops. The workshops focused on technical and operational aspects of physical protection systems and material control and accountancy capabilities from various countries around the world. The programs provided participants the opportunity to present, discuss and exchange information on all elements of physical protection systems and material control and accountancy capabilities, with the intent to identify best practices regarding these systems. The agenda and format provided an excellent opportunity for ideas to be shared in the hopes of saving the entire community the cost of redundant activities and resulting in more effective physical protection systems and material control and accountancy capabilities. This paper will discuss the product of the MC&A workshop and discuss the upcoming follow-on workshop.
