In November 2019, over 100 participants from more than 30 countries attended the International Transportation Security Symposium (ITSS) in Tokyo, Japan. At the ITSS, participants demonstrated their willingness to engage on the important topic of improving both national level and cross-border Transportation Security regimes. Nuclear and Radioactive materials spend a relatively small amount of time during their lifecycle in transit. However, a disproportionate amount of material is stolen or lost during this phase of the nuclear fuel cycle. Nuclear and radioactive materials in transport pose unique security challenges because adversaries can choose the location, timing, and method of attack that provides the highest likelihood of success. The participants of last year’s ITSS stressed the need to raise awareness about effective Transportation Security and continue the dialogue internationally. Participants also identified sub-topics within Transport Security that require further discussion and attention. These sub-topical areas include: Regulations and National Level Infrastructure Development, Insider Threat for Transport, Information Security, Physical Protection and Response, Drills and Exercises/ Table-top Exercises.Efforts are underway to hold follow up events on a Regional Basis. Two events are currently planned and will be hosted by Colombia and Romania, with future exchanges anticipated to be focused on sub-topical areas identified by the ITSS. This paper will address the strategy for increasing international collaboration and continuing the momentum set forward by last year’s International Transportation Security Symposium.
