Abstract
The U.S. Department of Energy and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have enjoyed a long history of cooperation and collaboration in physical protection. In the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001, this collaboration has accelerated. Support and assistance for recent proposals by the Director General on physical protection, including expanded International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) missions and training have highlighted this accelerated collaboration. This paper discusses the cooperative and collaborative relationship the DOE/NNSA/NA243 Office of International Safeguards and the IAEA Office of Physical Protection and Material Security have enjoyed, and the current focus of these activities.
