Abstract
The Department of Energy (DOE), through the Office of Plutonium, Uranium, and Special Materials Inventory (hereafter referred to as the Office), has undertaken several initiatives to improve the knowledge and capability for tracking and reporting its nuclear material inventories. These initiatives include specific studies to better understand and reconcile inventory data in historical records and analyses of nuclear material data to identify where improvements in tracking and inventory controls can enhance the quality of the U.S. Government’s nuclear materials inventory information. The Office has undertaken efforts to upgrade site and national-level nuclear materials tracking capabilities to meet new and emerging requirements. This paper summarizes these various initiatives:
