Abstract
In the age of decreasing budgets, manpower restrictions and work place efficiencies, it is imperative that Government Owned Contractor Operated facilities continue to strive for efficiencies in their current work practices. K-Area Operations recently initiated a MC&A 5 year plan which will integrate such efficiencies and lessens the need for operator involvement when: obtaining material control and accountability data; additional program development; and implementing inventory controls. Such activities have routinely been performed through tedious hand kept records and manual input through operating procedures. With today’s efficient and readily available computer systems, easy to use bar code inventory systems, and wide use of bar codes for item identification, it only makes sense to integrate such systems in our system - to not only modernize our antiquated way of performing such task, but to allow the precious manpower resources to be better utilized on other tasks. This paper will describe the application of such a system to one component of the overall MC&A operation in K- Facility at the Savannah River Site.
