Abstract
The Open Joint-Stock Company “Machine-Building Plant” (OAO MSZ), trademark “Elemash,” is located approximately 50 kilometers to the east of Moscow, in the city of Elektrostal’, Moscow region. Today, Elemash is one of the oldest enterprises of the country’s nuclear industrial sector. It has more than 50 years experience of work in the field of nuclear machine building. The first nuclear reactors—ones built for the nuclear power plant in Obninsk and for the icebreaker “Lenin”--operated on nuclear fuel produced at Elemash. Today, Elemash is part of the corporation “TVEL” – one of the leading purveyors of nuclear fuel in the world market. Elemash is one of the world’s largest producers of heat-generating fuel assemblies (HFA) and component parts for the active zones of nuclear reactors for Russian and foreign NPPs, as well as for reactor plants of the Russian nuclear fleet. Fifty-seven nuclear reactors in 12 countries operate on HFAs produced at our enterprise. Elemash HFAs produce energy in one of every eight power-generating NPPs of the world. Along with the production of nuclear fuel, the enterprise also produces constant magnets, and stainless steel and titanium pipes. Therefore, it is not coincidental that from the moment of the conclusion of the Intergovernmental Agreement between the Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation and the US Department of Defense, dated September 2, 1993, at the first Russian-American meeting of the technical working group in Moscow in February 1994, it was decided that OAO MSZ will act as the basic pilot model for other Minatom enterprises for work in the field of joint development of MPC&A systems, as well as the site for joint steps in furthering trust between our two countries.
