Abstract
In the nuclear industry, you should not just hire some random freight forwarder or trucking company and expect them to pick up your uranium shipment and deliver it halfway around the world. The process of moving nuclear material from a uranium mill to a conversion or fuel fabrication facility can involve several layers of regulations, permits, licenses, and Regulators. While the transport of uranium from the mill is currently un-categorized material [1] (defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency {IAEA}), it should be protected in accordance with management best practices. This paper will discuss some of the best practices that are implemented for the transport and highlight some of the differences between un-categorized and categorized material. When these transports travel across international boundaries and utilize different modes (road, ocean, or rail), the monitoring of the shipment can involve coordination of several entities to ensure it’s safe and secure arrival.
