Abstract
The U.S. Department of Energy, including the National Nuclear Security Administration, require flexible storage for a variety of small items that will be retained for the National Nuclear Materials Archive; sampled for forensic characterization; or retained for high-value use or potential use. Item management may include safe storage, sampling, repackaging, consolidation, and ultimate disposition. Often a combination of container and contents is suitable for a storage facility, but a site may find it difficult to accommodate “small” items that may require different safety measures than those used for primary facility missions. The Office of Nuclear Materials Integration and the Savannah River National Laboratory are evaluating a suite of packages and/or licenses and unique facility requirements to identify packages that would be most efficient for future Complex needs.
