Abstract
The recent Nuclear Safety course provides lesson materials related to the radiological hazards of nuclear ractor, their potential accidents and the technology to control them. There is no nuclear security subject given in the course. The Nuclear Engineering study program under the Engineering Physics department of Universitas Gadjah Mada has decided to extend its education to involve nuclear security to manifest the national commitment to the pursuit of nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Nuclear reactor accident is the intersection between nuclear reactor safety and security. Nuclear reactor’s undesired event or accident is any event which is able to break out any function for confining and cooling the nuclear fuel. The causes of nuclear reactor accident may be categorized into system failure, human error and natural disaster. The system failure due to uncontrolled process and failure of the component is almost all of the given lesson materials up to now. The nuclear reactor safety and security has the same intent to maintain the fundamental function. The aim of nuclear reactor safety is preventing any system failure, human error and anticipating natural disaster, meanwhile the security is preventing and anticipating malicious act that try to make any system failure and human error. Extending nuclear reactor safety to security means to involve the malicious act into the causes of accident. The new category of accident causes become system failure, human error, malicious act and natural disaster. There is a need to analyse comprehensively the role of malicious act in breaking out the nuclear reactor safety technology. The security materials of nuclear reactor safety especially its system related will be added to the recent lecture’s materials. To provide proper insertion of security materials some safety materials will be compacted. The integrated safety and security of nuclear reactor course consists of 16 week with 2 hours lecture in a week. Two weeks of all of the weeks will be used for midsemester and final semester exams.
