Abstract
\"E-Safeguards\" recognizes the emergence of the network as the viable operational medium for the new millennium. Presently, safeguards is primarily is focused on attended monitoring. Over the past several years, sporadic efforts have been directed at unattended and remotely monitored systems with the intent to reduce inspection hours and travel. The designers of remote and unattended safeguards systems, especially over the past year, have begun to increasingly use techniques and technology present in web-enabled applications. This paper explores the use of network technologies, secure server techniques, and e-commerce solutions including its paramount use of authentication and encryption. We also examine the inherent or its off-the-shelf solutions. Finally, we look at what subsets of mainstream technology are applicable to the safeguards regime.
