Abstract
An ultraviolet light transmitting zoom lens was designed and constructed for the digital Cerenkov viewing device (DCVD) and the Cerenkov viewing device (CVD) because the standard 250 mm and 105 mm lenses are no longer produced. The new lens features a zoom range from 80 to 200 mm and accommodates the detector size used in the DCVD. A joystick controls the zoom and focus of the zoom lens. The lens was field-tested with pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuels and boiling water reactor (BWR) fuels with a variety of cooling times and burnups. The DCVD equipped with the zoom lens was able to verify low burnup (5,412 MWd/t U) and long-cooled (30 years) BWR spent fuel, which is comparable to the performance of the 250 mm lens. The zoom lens is superior to the 250 mm lens for the detection of light collimation from spent fuel and is slightly better than the 105 mm lens. Ergonomically, the motorized zoom lens operation is superior to the fixed focal length lenses. The results of a field test using the zoom lens are presented.
