Abstract
The U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) will continue transitioning to the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility during the next decade. This transition includes the continued movement of materials from long-term storage vaults located within the production areas and materials used as working inventory for production activities stored in Y-12’s interim storage areas. The deinventory of the interim storage areas during the next ten years is essential in preparing for the transition to the Uranium Processing Facility. This paper will explain the approach for those two similar but complex areas. The continued execution of the movement of Y-12’s Special Nuclear Material from those storage areas is crucial to the transformation and modernization of the site. This deinventory supports the transition to the 21st century Nuclear Security Enterprise envisioned by Mr. Thomas P. D’Agostino, Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration. This paper will quantify and expound on the task as much as possible in an unclassified manner.
