Abstract
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Y-12 National Security Complex is preparing to move into their new Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility (HEUMF). This paper will explain the execution plan for moving Y-12’s Special Nuclear Material (SNM) from various locations within the plant to the new HEUMF. It will describe the transportation scenarios, primary and secondary re-containerization efforts, relocation of materials and the project management and planning effort required to accomplish this giant task. The many material reduction campaigns that have taken place over the last several years in an attempt to reduce the complexity of this task will also be discussed briefly. The current schedule and cost restrictions will also be touched on to the extent possible. The enormity of this task is not easily conveyed in an unclassified manner but this paper will attempt to expound on the task as possible.
