Demonstration of Safeguards Technologies for Uranium Enrichment Plants Workshop

This paper describes the Demonstration of Safeguards Technologies for Uranium Enrichment Plants Workshop held at ORNL July 10–11, 2008, and the associated technologies demonstrated. The workshop provided a forum for 56 participants from several countries and areas of expertise to discuss how current technologies can address current and emerging verification challenges at gas centrifuge enrichment plants (GCEPs) and to demonstrate the current capabilities and functionality of prototype systems that are being developed and tested. The goal was to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards for current and planned GCEPs; solicit operator input to identify practical ways to protect sensitive information and minimize the burden associated with inspection activities; and reduce the strain on IAEA resources.
