Abstract
The U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y-12 National Security Complex will continue transitioning to the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility (HEUMF) throughout the next decade. Moving Y-12’s special nuclear material from interim storage areas to HEUMF is crucial to the continued transformation and modernization of the site. The final and perhaps most difficult stage of this transition effort, referred to as Area 5 Deinventory, involves transferring materials from Y-12’s interim and in-process storage areas while supporting the accelerated transition to the new Uranium Processing Facility. To accomplish this momentous task, the deinventory strategy must be balanced with long-term strategic planning objectives, production goals, and other mission objectives, which presents new challenges and innovation opportunities to the deinventory team and to Y-12.
