Abstract
“A day in the life” of a MBA Custodian at theY-12 National Security Complex is not limited to the responsibility for oversight and technical leadership for Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability (NMCA) within the material balance areas (MBAs). A MBA Custodian acts as the primary interface on NMCA issues with the operations organization that manages the activities within the MBA accounting for the special nuclear material. A MBA Custodian at the Y-12 National Security Complex serves many roles and responsibilities. As Y-12 reduces its footprint a custodian would assist in the planning and implementation of controls to transfer material and cleanout of older buildings and with moves into the newer buildings. A custodian could be involved in Workshops helping other countries learn how to manage and control accountable material from loss and diversion. A custodian may be called to support the Vulnerability Assessment group in identifying potential weakness and improvement to material control. Other responsibilities also include investigations, support of performance testing, and anomaly resolution. Tasked each and every day a MBA custodian at the Y-12 National Security Complex is involved in many diverse roles.
