Abstract
This paper presents the results of educational efforts to enhance nuclear security in South Africa, with focus paid to efforts to develop university faculty through ‘train- the-educator’ programmes. South Africa currently operates the only nuclear power plant on the African continent and has plans to significantly expand its nuclear infrastructure. In this context, there is a strong need for human resource development in the emergent field of nuclear security. Furthermore, South Africa represents a role model for regional neighbours aspiring to develop their own nuclear power programme. The development of nuclear security education in South Africa could thus serve as a blueprint for regional efforts.
