Abstract
In recent decades, the US Department of Energy national laboratories (now operated by the National Nuclear Security Agency) have developed monitoring techniques for international nonproliferation and arms control applications. National and international security challenges have shifted since the end of the Cold War, and we now recognize the need to work with other countries to develop cooperative monitoring systems and technology. To this end, the Cooperative Monitoring Center (CMC) was established at Sandia National Laboratories in 1994 to promote international cooperation for a more peaceful world through technology. At the CMC, environmental and nuclear transparency cooperative monitoring projects are aimed at improving regional stability and furthering our national security goals to prevent nuclear proliferation. As these cooperative monitoring projects are implemented, participating countries build trust with each other and identify common interests and goals.
