Complementary Sensor Selection for High Security Applications

During the last five years, there has been confusion within the Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Defense (DoD) regarding the concept of “complementary sensors” and how it influences sensor selection, sensor layouts, and security design for high security applications. This paper will discuss the proper application of complementary sensors, a process for sensor selection, and will seek to clarify common misunderstandings associated with the concept of complementary sensors that can unnecessarily increase security costs and possibly decrease security effectiveness.
